The first few days of school included some lengthy lines of traffic for parents waiting to drop students.
In response, LSW administration moved student drop-off time from 7:05 a.m. to 6:50 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:50 a.m. on late start Fridays.
The line waiting for doors to open had become long and potentially hazardous to young student drivers even though last year students and parents adjusted to the later time of 7:10. This year’s initial time of 7:05, with an earlier school start time of 7:25, is apparently proving difficult.
“Opening the building earlier for students helped to spread out the traffic pressure over a larger amount of time. This has helped to minimize backups and some congestion,” said resource officer Bobby Conard whose responsibilities include assisting administration in locating safety issues and supervising the campus.
Conard offered some suggestions for students and parents. “Find a time and drop off point that works for you and is the most efficient based upon the campus design. Being patient is important and understanding that a few minutes one way or the other, can make a big difference in traffic flow,” Conard said, “Also if dropping off, please pull forward as far as you can and be prepared to exit the vehicle. Always remember, the district does provide transportation for students via the bus.”
Adjusting to the start time change and returning back to school, LSW teachers will be taking attendance at the start of first hour (7:25 a.m.) and administering tardies to those who arrive late. If a student arrives at 7:30 a.m. or after, they must report to the attendance office before going to their first hour.
