This past week, the Lady Titans faced both Ray-Pec and Lee’s Summit North in games going only two sets.
Against Ray-Pec, the Titans won 25-19 in the first set, and then 25-21 in the second set. Similarly, the Titans beat the Broncos at home 25-15 and 25-9, thanks to solid blocking from junior Abby Massengill, and strong defense from junior Aly Gurtiza.
Massengill said that the reason for their success this week was teamwork and becoming a collective unit. “Hitters are connecting with their setters and the defense is learning to work really well together,” Massengill said.
Gurtiza said she thinks that team chemistry was integral to their success, “In stressful situations we came together very well and performed as a team. Along with that I think our mentality on defense to never give up on the ball makes a huge difference,” Gurtiza said.
Playing the Broncos is different than playing some other teams. According to Massengill, “The rivalry and pride in being the best in the city is a big difference. We take all games seriously but North and Lee’s Summit we take more personally.”
Next week, the Titans face Park Hill at home and Blue Springs away, teams that Massengill thinks could be tough. “Park Hill was good in Sectionals last year … and also Blue Springs took a game from us so this game is really important for our pride,” Massengill said.
Catch the Titans at home at seven o’clock on Tuesday against Park Hill.
