Last Sunday the community of Lee’s Summit lost their own personal superhero — one who defined strength and took the definition of bravery to the next level. West Alumni Sam Smith, 19, passed away in the early morning after battling cancer for the past five years.

Smith’s cancer was first detected after breaking his leg at a Summit Lakes Middle School football practice, and after he was diagnosed he continued to seek treatment for the majority of his high school career.

Immediately after his diagnosis, the community rallied behind him as he soon became known as “Superman Sam.” A hero who fought his own battle with purpose, Smith grew as an example and role model for his peers as his positive attitude shined through his love for life.

With a smile that was bright enough to light up a room, Smith walked through the halls of West making friends everywhere he turned. Not only did he leave a mark on the lives of various friends and peers, but also his teammates, as he was a part of the West’s Swim team.

The team is currently raising money to build a memorial garden at Smith’s home, and is taking donations at  from anyone looking to be a part. Donations may be given to Coach Colleen Gibler in room 1280 or to a senior on the team or give to the Memorial GoFundMe to support funeral and medical costs: https://www.gofundme.com/superman-sam-smith-memorial-fund
