With the new Walmart coming to Lee’s Summit in March many current employees will be trained in new locations.
Junior Dylan Brendel and senior Johnna Elliott both went through the training required for the job. They then went to their own departments to get further training in the specific area.
“For new hires you are required to do online training that handles safety, register work, and a ton of different topics,” said Brendel. This is mandatory for every employee, however some have more to do than others.
“For me in electronics it only took me six hours to complete but it carried by job,” said Brendel. He only took six hours and then he was done with this training but not all employees are like that. “I am training to be a cashier, and been training for the last few weeks” said Elliott. She had training after the online stuff for specifically being a cashier.
“I love it so far, I’ve worked at 2 stores so far and everyone seems really nice. The managers are very flexible and have worked with my schedule very well,” said Brendel. ‘
Having managers that are flexible with your schedule as a high schooler has a big impact. They are training employees at different locations depending on the department that the student is working in. Brendel has worked at the Independence and Lee’s Summit locations.
“I am working working at the one in Lee’s Summit. I will transfer to the new store off of 150 when it opens,” said Elliott. They are training all employees at stores around here and then they are going to transfer all of them.
When they are transferred to the new location it will be a few weeks before the actual opening day. By doing this they are able to help stock the shelves and get the store completely ready for the grand opening.
Opening up new locations for businesses can have both positive and negative sides.
“I think it is exactly what this area needs and is going to do very well,” said Brendel.
It is a major change in growth for the area.
“I think it will go great! It is closer to a lot of people and it is right off the highway so everyone can see it,” said Elliott. They seemed to pick a stop that is easily accessible.
“Based off what I’ve been told and understand it going to be the nicest store in the area. I know at one point they were even talking about having glass walls to separate some sections,” said Brendel. Improvements from older locations or older buildings can have a positive impact.
“The Independence one has a bit older staff who knew more to help me out,” said Brendel. If the employee’s are trained well and can answer questions that customer have the store might have a higher success rate.
Many reasons for applying to this new location have arose. “Good pay, transferable for moving and college, amazing discounts and the fact that it’s close to my house,” said Brendel. These things all play a role in applying for a new job. “Better pay, and I have the opportunity to advance,” said Elliott.
