Some significant changes have been made to school lunches for the first time in 15 years.

With help from the US Department of Agriculture, the first lady Michelle Obama has implemented new regulations in districts across the nation.

One of the regulations requires products to be at least 51 percent whole wheat, and this is not what students consider ideal. Not only did the Lee’s Summit West cafeteria see consumer drops, the school store did as well. The school store experienced a 50 percent drop in sales from the same time the previous year.

Lee’s Summit West’s cafeteria manager Kathy Ward says “I’d like to give you guys better choices, but my hands are tied.”

So, is giving strictly healthy options a good idea? Ward doesn’t think so. “Kids have to learn to make good choices. You can’t make good choices if you’re never given the opportunity.”
