Guardians of the Galaxy and the Cinema

I know what you’re thinking. “A movie starring both a talking tree and a talking raccoon? Yeah no thanks.” Trust me, that’s exactly what I was thinking when I was dragged to see “Guardians of the Galaxy” for some quality family time.

I rolled my eyes and slouched in my seat and prepared myself for 2 hours of absolute torture. However, 2 hours later, as I picked up my belongings and left the theatre I found that I was smiling. Rather than torture me, the film actually entertained me.

Trust me, I went in telling myself I would not like this movie, I really didn’t want to like it, but I couldn’t help myself. The movie had a certain charm to it.

Basically, without spoiling anything, the movie follows the stories of five well-meaning criminals whose paths cross while they are serving time in prison. After a find a common goal and a common enemy, the unlikely team embark on a journey full of adventure, suspense, rad 80’s tunes, and lot’s of laughs.

I mean how can you not cheer on Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) with a personality like Shawn Spencer on USA’s Psych? He and the rest of the Guardians create a group of underdogs that are impossible not to root for. I mean, who doesn’t like a good underdog?

Besides, did I mention the soundtrack is a throwback to the 80’s? It’s golden.

Don’t take my word for it, take the people who critique movies for a living’s word for it. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 92 percent fresh (comparatively The Purge: Anarchy only got 52 percent). Tom Long, writer for the Detroit News said, “Guardians of the Galaxy” has wit, energy and zaniness to spare. It will pop your corn and leave you hungry for more.”

I mean I’m not saying GOTG (unofficial abbreviation I just now created) is the best movie I’ve seen. As far as superhero movies go, it’s far from my favorite. However, it’s definitely not on my “Worst Movies of all Time” list, and was definitely worth the five dollars I paid to see it at the Plaza.
